Spring Haiku

Winter thaw. Snowdrop
waits on the boulevard for
the crocus party.

***

Edges of snow slink
higher up greening mountains,
trickling surrender.

***

Last fall's leaves still cling
to branches. Listless tatters,
make way for green!

***

Lone daffodil bud
periscopes above purple
heather: rising queen.

Lemon

Based on "Points of Lemon," a woodblock print by Masato Arikushi of a painting by Mary Pratt

The lemon surrenders itself,
wedges of light ignited
by late afternoon sun, burnishing
the silver boat of its saucer that floats
atop the table's inky glimmer.
Translucent layers of shadow
fall like spires, ghost
leaves from a forgotten grove.
At the centre, incandescence.
