Departed

we sat in bed on a Thursday
afternoon, held hands while we watched

Perseverance land on Mars, seek
the sands of past life, heard NASA

scientists whoop and holler, high-
five each other, marveled at images

transmitted from the red planet
back to our pale blue dot, listened

to the sounds of a distant sphere
traveling to our town, wondered

if we might be the last to find
the evidence of life departed
