Who's Listening

Who's Listening

The sibyl isn't listening any more.
She's heard the same old story
over and over.
She's tired of heroic wars
easy lies,
pleas
to settle scores.
She's not surprised.

The fateful hints she gave,
even at her best,
were not meant
to save,
but to let you
blunder through.

At Gordias, Alexander
cut the tangled knot,
then conquered
all of Asia,
prophecy come true.

The trick:
he died soon after.

No doubt
the sybil knew.
Still, she didn't tell him
what or how to do.
