Mill Town

by Lori Lamothe

Mill Town

Early Sunday morning
someone in a three-
decker shoots up,
a dog escapes its chain,
and an artist balances
the final pink line
on a statue of liberty
built from negative
pregnancy tests.
Her boyfriend films
himself flossing his teeth
as a four-year-old
in a Halloween costume
flies out an open
window, fear beating
hummingbird wings
as his cape brands death
onto crimson sky.
