Heat Sick

Heat Sick

This is one of those days
that is so hot you stand
cooking rice in the kitchen
in nothing but your blue
and white striped cotton
pajama bottoms and bra
while talking to your mama
on the phone wondering
if the heat makes
a difference in how long
you cook the rice while eyeing
the guy mowing his lawn
next door and cursing
yourself for not buying
beer so you could oh-so-subtly
offer him one and make
yourself hotter while watching
beads of sweat on his lips
comingle with those on the bottle.
