On the Actualization of Dreams
Technically, we can still dream—
they never quite managed to devise
a means to stop people dreaming—
but they did find a way to disable the
mechanism that enables dreams to
become reality.Basically, they neutered them.
It was a painless operation—
something in the water supply
(tasteless, colourless, odourless)—
and a single dose—
equivalent to half a cup of tea—
proved quite, quite effective. An empty promise is still a promise.
And no one noticed because, well,
dreams had never been very good
at becoming real—
that was part of their charm—
and everyone simply assumed
it wasn't their turn.Insidious, when you think about it.
