Springtime in Nod

We're seeing a long spring rain:
deciduous trees have opened their new umbrellas.

Graduations must be moved indoors.

Granddaughter Emma used to have
an intimate relationship with puddles, every size
of puddle, but has learned

from higher authority how to step over or around.

Unbridled joy settles down
into a chastened attention to the sane and sensible.

She considers the lilies, knowing better than to pick.

In Sunday School
we used to sing, "This Is My Father's World."
Childish trebles in a children's world.

Now, on even the nicest days, we check for ticks.
