First Signs

First Signs

Today the sun collapsed in slivers
Between the bark of the oaks
Grown still, the acorns fell
Into the stream like omens
Of a law I've long preferred
To look at from a distance
That has finally reached me

That I exist in time,
That I is a savage lie
Made from the same
Paper I use to write this
Sentence, even empty
Space becomes a part

And I am small
And I am nestled in
This home; how many years
Go by each time I blink
And see shirt sleeves
Wrapped around my
Inkless wrists,

Friends who peered
Straight through me,
What was it they saw
In that unpleated heart
And did a little moonlight
Make its way along?

Oh my body is a bottle
Of the good stuff
I've been saving
For a special occasion
And the expiration date
Is coming up

Would drinking it be wise?
If I were given
A little time to think,
Would anything?
