Fibers of Light

by Adam Day

Fibers of Light

The police love us;
we've rescued

them from the tedium
of traffic violations,

domestic disputes.
But they don't like

us. Still we gift them
fur cuffs, masquerade

masks. Their strides
carry a breeze up

from the river. Perhaps
love feels most legitimate

when received
with a bit of pain.
