Coping

We went into the wilderness. We wandered
Through the woods. We bathed in lakes. We slept
Alongside blazing fires or wakeful pondered
This beauty that our lives had lost. We wept.

There is no sky like outside sky, of course.
No air like outside air, no gold like wonder.
One moment we were drinking at the source
Of all that's free and good, then came the thunder.

Rain fell for days; we nailed a roof together.
We clung like lichen to the purity
Of wild creatures braving any weather.
When frost hit, though, we moved back to the city.

We miss the air, the space, but it's the rain
We think about behind our window pane.
