Punch Line

I was the woman with wings you passed
without a glance this morning. I followed
you onto the bus. I read the comics
on the other side of your folded paper
while we stood swaying, hanging on
the bar above. I waited for you
to refold the paper so I could read
the punch lines, but you didn't. You left
the bus, I stayed on. I'm more interested
now in endings than in beginnings.
