The Great Mother Has No Face

by Erika Lutzner

The Great Mother Has No Face

For Wislawa Szymborska

Do you believe in rebirth?
the goat asked the stone as they lay
by the river taking in the noonday heat

goat and stone

stone pillowing goat
goat protecting stone

river gently flowing past
future meeting in the middle of yesterday

stone turns to goat, were we family before
we knew each other?

goat contemplates for a moment,
we've known each other before God
existed, before the creation of moons,
I am blood, you are bone—
