She smiled when I rattled off what I knew of Degas, Van Gogh, Picasso, Hopper, and classical music and literature. It pleased her that I was trying so hard. I probably could have saved myself all that effort. I believe she decided right off that she'd take me as her lover, that very first moment in the lobby of the Met.
