First Date

by Patricia Haney

First Date

When you buy a new pair of denim, the paper label warns the buyer about
indigo dyes and how these dyes can bleed. Because of this, new denim
should be isolated when washing the first few times.

You separate the old from the new.

When I was nineteen, I went on my first date with another woman. Emotions
I did not know I could feel brewed inside me the days leading up to our
meeting. I even bought a new pair of dark wash jeans. She picked me up in
her Honda Civic and we cruised down Lake Shore Drive to Foster Beach
and we kissed.

Just like when you buy new pair of denim—the first time you go on a date
with another woman, you should separate the old from the new.
