Trans-Europe Express

The aunt formerly known as
My mother's brother
Would twist my arm
For saying uncle.

The family elders always thought
It was just a rough patch
Something Prince would grow out
Of eventually—the Drag Queen
Paraphernalia and fascination with
Freddie Mercury—this too shall pass
Was the prevailing hope.

"Don't hold your breath on it,"
Was Prince's response to requests
Demanding an end to the
Embarrassment: A Morehouse man
Throwing Princess Parties
At that, that, MEN'S Health Crisis center!
Big Momma couldn't bring herself to say
The first word, so she'd strike it
And say the word Men's like it was two.

After Big Momma's funeral and
After all the food at the repast was eaten
(Except for the raw vegetables platter)
Auntie Princess took me to a party
At the G.M.H.C. center.
We roller-skated to "Trans-Europe Express"
And ate jumbo fried pickles
With special dipping sauce.

The worst day of my life
Transformed into the best.
