Time Out of Mind

The encircling phrases,
no wider than these kitchen walls,
vaporous, steam rising, forgotten
again and again
through time, through generations
we have said
Are you warm enough? Sure?
I just put the kettle on.
Look! It's starting to snow.
Another war.
The dark comes so early.
The days go so quickly.
Are you warm enough?
Here. Have something hot.
I'm going out.
Do we need bread?
I'll be back soon.
Is there something you want?
Yes, I'll be careful.
Don't worry. Don't worry.
Stay warm.
